Why people do this instead of using their own number

Keeping your real number out of it.Once Facebook has your number it feeds it into contact-sync, ad targeting, “people you may know” — the usual. Verifying with a number you'll never use again just skips all of that.

Running more than one account.Facebook wants a number per account, and most people only have one phone. Questions people actually ask

Does a virtual number actually work for Facebook verification?
Yes — Facebook doesn't know or care that the number isn't a physical SIM in your pocket. It sends an SMS, our number receives it, you type the code in. That part is reliable.
Will Facebook definitely accept the number, though?
That we can't promise. Facebook runs its own fraud checks on every number, and every so often a number gets flagged before it even sends an SMS — nothing we can do about that part, it's on their end. What we do control is the delivery: if a code doesn't arrive, cancel the activation and you get refunded, no argument.
How long does the SMS take?
Normally a handful of seconds. Occasionally slower if Facebook's own systems are backed up, but that's rare.
